As I received my bimonthly copy of World magazine, the front cover was shocking. The title page of the February 25 issue was, "Living on borrowed time...the threat of nuclear terrorism on American soil!" Featured article was "Nuke Nightmare!"
It was sixty years ago, in Fulton, Mo., on March 5, 1946, Winston Churchill spoke of how "From Stettin in the Baltic to Trieste in the Adriatic an iron curtain has descended across the [European] Continent."
His speech signaled the beginning of an American and British understanding that the Cold War had begun. When the Soviet Union speedily developed nuclear missiles, that war threatened to become fiery--and the threat remained for the next four decades, until Ronald Reagan hung tough and the Soviet empire disintegrated.
Now a new threat looms. Iran's leaders could light their crumbling cities with nuclear power, but few now doubt that they are intent on building a nuclear arsenal. The radical Islamic regime will be able to export nuclear packages to any of the many terror organizations with which it maintains ties.
That may be the largest threat now--not missiles in the sky but a bomb smuggled into the United States on a container ship or carried with drugs across the border.
Harvard professor Graham Allison says a nuclear attack on U.S. soil within the next 10 years is probable. Former secretary of Defense William Perry put the odds for an attack by 2010 at 50-50.
This should stir our hearts to get desperate before God but not cause us to be afraid. Paul told Timothy, "God has not given us the spirit of fear." We know these things will come to pass as prophesied in Zachariah 14:12 "And the LORD will send a plague on all the nations that fought against Jerusalem. Their people will become like walking corpses, their flesh rotting away. Their eyes will shrivel in their sockets, and their tongues will decay in their mouths." This could be the result of nuclear explosions!
A pastor from Uganda was speaking at Capital Christian Center in Sacramento, California on April 13, 2005. We were preparing to pray at the Capitol building the next day as part of our prayer across America. The Pastor from Uganda said that America will either pray out of desperation or we will eventually pray out of devastation. He said that Americans prayed briefly out of devastation after 9-11-01. It has been said that the events of 9-11 will influence America for as long as historians put ink on paper, but will it get us to our knees before God?
If we could only get the Church to wake up and get on her knees before God and truly become desperate, I believe much of our nation could be spared great devastation!
We continue to travel each week to different locations, challenging people to pray. The Holy Spirit put this question to my heart, "Jesus said His house was a house of prayer!" If the church is not a house of prayer, it is a ___________________? We must fill in the blank.
During the month of February we spoke at Transformation Cincinnati; Hamilton Christian Center; Maranatha Chapel, Evergreen Park; and Peotone Presbyterian Church. I am amazed at how the hearts of people are stirred when we share the burden for our great nation.
Our next assignments for March are Trinity Evangelical Christian Church, Monee; Southside Tabernacle, Chicago; Pilson Assembly, Pilson; and Trinity Assembly of God in Zion, IL.
Keep us in your prayers and check our web site at Prayeracrossamerica.org, for dates of our speaking engagements.
